Course Description

Calling all helping professionals and those who serve as lay caregivers for those they love: Join us for a course that teaches practices to renew, sustain, and deepen our capacities to love and extent care.

In this four-week class Leslie Langbert offers an introduction to Sustainable Compassion Training (SCT), a relational method of cultivating compassion. This method of compassion highlights our need to experience ourselves as objects of care and compassion in order to extend care and compassion sustainably to others; our need to see others in their deep dignity and worth beyond our limiting labels or ideas in order to extend care more widely; and our need to feel at home with ourselves in order to be a welcoming presence to others. Your instructor will provide tools to deepen participants’ experiences of receiving care, extending care, and expanding self-care in order to avoid burn out and empathy fatigue.

Each of the sessions includes discussion and learning from both research findings (e.g. including neuroscience, social psychology, and compassion science) and ancient contemplative traditions. Brief guided meditation exercises are included in the sessions as a way to foster the deepening of compassion from an intellectual construct to a sustained heartfelt response to suffering. Participants will be provided with audio recordings to continue practice if they wish.

Prior meditation experience is not required. This course is limited to 15 participants.
